109 legion of friends in surrounding communities. Mr. Garland M. Canter was elected to the Board on November 19, 1964, succeeding the late Mr. Clagett. He was the owner of Garland M. Canter, Inc. and distributed Phillips 66 oil products. Mr. Canter was born in Stephens City in 1906 and moved to Berryville in 1938, where he was a distributor for the Republic Oil Refining Company. He later formed his own company. The January 21, 1965 stockholders’ meeting was held in the social room of Berryville Baptist Church. It was announced that, through the sale of new stock, shareholders had increased by 117. The market value of stock was reported at $40 per share. On April 1, 1965, Kenneth Presgraves, Buford Homer Shupe, Mary Matilda Shupe and James Powell were charged with robbery of Bank of Clarke County’s Boyce Branch, which occurred at 12:56 P.M. $12,029 was stolen and later recovered. Shupe and Presgraves were involved with the actual robbery, where they approached both Edith Rodgers and Audrey Hudson. Mrs. Hudson was instructed to hold the bag while Mrs. Rodgers was ordered to fill it. They were then herded into the back room. Mr. Philip Cunningham, a proprietor of Lockes’ Store in Millwood, was coming in as they were exiting. He got their license number and they were arrested 20 minutes later. They chose Route 522 to Front Royal as their escape route. At the same time, most of the area state troopers were on their way to Front Royal on Route 522 to attend the funeral of Chief Menefee. The robbers were captured shortly after a high-speed chase. Mrs. Rodgers called Miss Wisecarver at the Berryville office to report the robbery. Since it was April Fools’ Day, Miss Wisecarver didn’t believe her. One year later, Shupe and Powell petitioned the court claiming they were illegally detained. Their petitions were denied by Judge Elliott D. Marshall. Mr. Floyd L. McWilliams, Jr. was hired and began work on March 20, 1967, filling a new position working with the Credit Department. He was a 1960 graduate of Richmond Professional Institute of the College of William & Mary with a Bachelor of Science degree. After working for Montgomery Ward, Mr. McWilliams, Jr. returned to Berryville in 1963 and worked for the Blue Ridge Insurance Agency. Promotions during 1968 included; Miss Wisecarver to Cashier, Mr. Edmunds to Vice President and Mr. McWilliams, Jr. to Assistant Cashier. Stock during 1968 was selling for $41.58 per share. The 1968 stockholders’ meeting was held on January 16th, with the bank’s number of full time employees growing to 19. Mr. McWilliams, Jr. was promoted to Assistant Vice President. Mr. J. Fred Jones was elected to the Board on February 15, 1969. Mr. E. G. Coiner, a Board member since 1924 and Chairman since 1946, resigned on November 28, 1969.
